The little girl next door apparently has head lice (not that there is toe lice). Mrs. G and I have never experienced anything like this, and the mom next door said just keep an eye out. Huh? What am I looking for? Why did I suddenly get the heeby jeebies? Can you help me out?
ew ew ew. The little girl (Marcia, if you MUST know) down the street got them when my kids were little. She was forever known after as "Mitey Marcia" Keep your kids away for a bit!
Move, move now, move as far away as possible!
Alright, it's not all that bad but they are a pain to get rid of!
Good Luck. It went around my sisters class and I was so nervous that i was going to get it. Hope you guys don't get it too.
Ok, really, it is more common than you think.
My little cousin got exposed to them at school, and they are really the cleanest people I have ever met in my life. People can catch them so easy... I went and bought stuff just in case I saw that I might have them after she caught them.
Unfortunately, when you have kids, it is not hard to catch...
I would go and buy some of the shampoo and use that till the neighbor kid is clean and then you should be OK. I remember when the girl down the street gave it to my sister. My mom threw all her stuffed animals out. She was very pissed and she was only 6 at the time.
Well, you're on the lookout for itching, black-sesame-seed-looking bugs, and small white nits.
As a preventive measure without being expensive and all chemical-y, you can buy a big-ass jar of mayo and coat everyone's hair at night. Cover with a shower cap (and then probably a towel on top of that, for the little ones at least), then wash out in the morning. It's cheap, it actually makes your hair nice and shiny, and it will suffocate any lice if there are any in there.
Tip- you don't have to throw out all the stuffed animals! (or hairbows for that matter) 24 hours tight in a ziploc bag will do it.
My sisters were exposed to it at school twice! It makes my head itch just thinking about it and I've never once had the pleasure of their company.
They can jump several feet, so do be on the lookout for the little boogers.
I'm probably exceptionally paranoid but as soon as I hear that my kids may have been exposed to lice I begin the process of shampooing EVERYTHING with RID. I'd rather kill the eggs BEFORE they hatch than actually have to chase the little multi-legged litchy-scratchy critters down.
Knock wood we have NEVER had lice in our house.
BTW...I'm itchy now just THINKING about this.
Thanks.
My little sister was the smelly/dirty kid in class and she had lice in permanent residence on her head. I got it twice as a kid. Get the shampoo, wash all of your clothes and bedding and hats and everything and hold your breath and hop on one foot and then they'll be gone. I guess it's pretty common for kids to get lice. They won't kill you, as far as I know. They just itch, and are gross. *shutters* My head itches now, thanks a lot!
Oh my never a fun battle.. I much rather deal with a flea empidimic. So much washing and disinfecting...
On on the toe lice comment... tthere is head lice and Body lice, so technically you could have toe lice. ;)
Good luck.. there is a big possiblity you have nothing to wory about as long as the kids haven't shared hats, comb, hair thingys. The keep is suffication! No not of the kids but of the lice.
There is plenty of information on the net. If anyone has light colored hair good luck! It is tough to see if there are eggs or not. I know I use to have to do the treatment regardless of if I had it just to be safe!
No shaving of the heads! I'm a hairstylist... Its not as bad as you think. It goes around schools this time of year, every year...
Go through the kids hair, you are looking for nits (the eggs) they are a tanish color and somewhat look like dry scalp. If you find something you think is a nit, try pulling it off with your thumb and first finger using your nails. If it doesn't come off the hair easily it is a nit and you need to go to the drugstore. Just follow the instructions very closely on the lice removal product.
Hope that helps.
Don't be a party pooper! I wanna see pictures of G and Mrs. G with no hair...
(But I agree, don't take my advice, I'm just out to stir up trouble...)
Ok. I had it once when I was little (it was from a trip to India)...and I got to say that check your children's hair like Mir said to. And if you see anything, buy the shampoo and use the comb to get out any of the nits.
There is a little girl down my street that gets it all the time. She used to spend the night with my girls until I found out.
The first thing you need to do is get lice shampoo, lice bedding spray, and a lice comb.
Apply to everyone's hair, following the directions carefully. Once rinsed out, you have to go through the hair with the lice comb to get the dead lice out. Most combs are not very good at getting the eggs out and most lice shampoo will not kill them regardless of what they claim.
Go back through the hair by hand and pull any remaining eggs out of the hair with your fingers. Use natural or florescent light to see them. Bad lighting will cause you to miss many eggs. They will be between brown and white, depending on whether they hatched or unhatched.
Pull all the bedding and pillows off the beds. Wash and dry on hot. What you cannot wash, put into plastic trashbags. Stuffed animals and such may have to be kept up for two weeks to ensure no lice have survived.
Use the lice spray on the couches, chairs, mattresses, etc. After it has dried, vacuum all the surfaces that you can, including your carpets. Empty your vacuum cleaner of it's bag and dispose.
They are a bitch to deal with, let me tell you, but they are quite common ... especially when you have kids in school.
Lice unfortunately love clean hair and social people. They have a great place to lay eggs and more people to spread to.
I had a situation once where a couple of groups of girls were passing lice back and forth to each other. Our living area was between the two, and we had a couple of our group members grease our scalps and braid our hair - we never got it, because the lice can't attach to the hair shaft when it's oily. In that situation, it was a great remedy - in yours, not so much. I'm too lazy to scroll up and see who made the mayo suggestion, but that'd work for smothering them overnight.
Move. I mean it. Move. And don't take anything with you.
Hopefully, you have nothing to worry about and it was just a scare. However, if not, I have a great homemade all natrual remedy that gets rid of the little buggers. (The commercial shampoos don't always work.) My good friend swears by this method when her daughter brought home lice that would NOT DIE.
Good luck. May your home stay lice free.
My kids had this for 6 months at one stage. Nothing I used worked (well nothing commercilly prepared for headlice) The only thing that worked was dragging them out of childcare so they couldn't be reinfested and combing through their hair each day with lavender oil mixed with sweet almond oil. Apparently lavender fabric softener does wonders for getting rid of them. I have heard the mites don't like dirty hair.
I even caught it and since i was pregnant i had to rely upon washing my hair at least once a day to get rid of it.
Get them early and keep your kids away from the infected girl until she is clear. And we have never had to get rid of soft toys because of lice. Lice need warmth to survive and blood to suck, they can only survive a short time off the body.
everyone had great advice... but dont fret at it being a 'dirty people's thing' it can happen to anyone.. Mainly they need clean heads to roam around in. They dont jump, they dont fly, unless the kids from next door came to your house and lay down on your furniture and within 12 hours time, your kids lay down on the same pillows, will they get it. They need blood to survive, that is what they do. If you do get some visitors, you will notice the kids scratching more, and you will see them (tiny white things, at the ends of the hair folicle near the root), and checking out the link to headlice is a good source, they will send you a free handbook on what to look for...) bagging up all the stuffed animals, washing everything, and vacuuming everything all up. Bagging, because of what I said, they will only live for a certain amount of time with out skin contact, bagging up stuffed animals, they will die. Just dont let them come over and sleep at your house lol, but they cant jump like a flea, or fly onto a persons head. FYI HTH!
Hey, check this out about the study of ancient head lice. It's really cool.
Yikes--just don't get them. Someone told me that the lice don't like the smell of Tea Tree shampoo(very minty). I don't know if that's true or not. We've avoided them so far and I'd like to keep it that way!
Now I'm all itchy. Get that RID Stuff cleanse the heads, wash them sheets pillow cases, hats,
OH CRAP I CANNOT STOP SCRATCHING NOW
use nix creme rinse *otc at the pharmacy or you local wal-mart* wash combs and brushes inthe dishwasher...rid spray bed carpets and furniture and car seats if not leather. put pillows big plastic bags along with the stuffed animals......for atleast a week after you wash them in the hottest water possible and dry them on high heat .... get one of those combs for nit removal.*dont skip this step most schools public and private have a NO NIT rule* if hair is blonde take kiddos outside in the sunshine....easier to see...but dont cut Ggirl's hair ..its not the end of the world and it can be cured......good luck....just everyday advice from a pediatricians office~!
Oh gee, thanks for making me itch now! I'd go buy some of the gunk they sell for those critters, just in case!
My mom brought me medicine, and when that didn't work she shaved my hair off, and washed all my clothes and sheets in very hot water, and burned my baseball hats!
